MARCOR's Safety Statistics Far Surpass Industry Averages
Hard Numbers Confirm Success of “Safety Beyond Compliance” Program
3/6/2009–HUNT VALLEY, MD–MARCOR Remediation, Inc. (MARCOR), a national environmental contracting firm, announces the impressive results of its major safety and health program today. The comprehensive, company-wide program called "Safety Beyond Compliance" was conceived in 2006 by the firm’s vice president, David A. Jungers, and developed in conjunction with an outside safety consultant to promote and reinforce company-wide safety procedures that exceed regulatory requirements and aim at best practices in the industry. The aggressive goals of the program included a 50 percent reduction in the lost work time accident rate for 2007 (compared with the average of the prior three years) and another 50 percent reduction in 2008. Both goals were achieved.
In 2008, after personnel worked well over a million total hours, the company experienced only three incidents that required employees to lose time from work, resulting in an official lost time incidence rate of 0.55. This standardized rate is equivalent to 100 workers putting in a full year of labor and collectively experiencing less than one case involving time away from the job. This level is also one-third of the rate that the company experienced in 2006, attesting to the success of this ongoing initiative.
Success is further evidenced by MARCOR’s outstanding Worker’s Compensation Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 0.71, which demonstrates that our injury record is much lower than the average for our industry, which is set at 1.0. In addition, our 2008 Injury and Illness Incident Rate is 2.03, which is excellent compared with the average for other specialty trade contractors such as the demolition industry (5.7), the waste management and remediation industry (6.4), the site preparation industry (4.6), and the composite construction industry (5.4), as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Rather than the typical short-lived safety campaign, Safety Beyond Compliance is integrated into every aspect of the company’s business and includes an incentive program for supervisors, a series of mandatory training modules focused on the most serious hazards identified by the company’s safety professionals, a mandatory job hazard analysis at the start of each project, and toolbox talks delivered each week on every job. The company also conducts a monthly conference call on safety that routinely includes nationally recognized experts who answer questions from management and safety field staff.
