Background
The profiled East Coast city client owns and manages thousands of buildings. As part of ongoing, regular maintenance, asbestos hazards are encountered which must be abated prior to remodeling or repair activities. In addition, emergency response actions are required when, for example, asbestos must be removed prior to an emergency plumbing or mechanical system repair. The typical asbestos-containing materials abated include vinyl asbestos floor tile and mastic; thermal insulation on pipes, ducts, and boilers; ceiling tile; and transite, a form of asbestos used in construction panels. Typical operations include large-scale abatement inside full negative pressure enclosures, small-scale patch and repair, glove bag removals, and decontamination procedures.
This Planned Response/Emergency Response ID/IQ contract requires several dedicated positions to ensure consistent quality of work. A full-time MARCOR project manager oversees estimates, submittals, regulatory compliance, customer liaison, billing, and directs the operations supervisor, who directs six full-time site supervisors. The combined efforts of these individuals, including their staffing and job execution responsibilities, result in a first-rate job performance for every project.
Job Description
A MARCOR team raced to contain and de-laminate the asbestos from an 80-foot-high facade - an acoustical application of the miracle fiber that had been in place since the building's stage area was constructed.
The project took place just before a papal visit to the city. A massive, elaborately constructed facade behind the stage, about 80 feet high and 6,000 square feet in area, was laminated with a friable form of asbestos for acoustical purposes. The asbestos was seriously deteriorated. Aside from the rush to complete the job before the big event, one of the most challenging aspects of this abatement project was containment of the huge area. The heavy weight of polyethylene sheeting suspended from more than 80 feet up necessitated the use of reinforcement hangers and extra care to ensure that negative air pressure was safely maintained inside the enclosure.
MARCOR has held similar ID/IQ contracts with other municipalities. Our long experience and affiliations with regulatory officials, combined with huge, nationwide resources for asbestos abatement, enable us to complete difficult jobs on schedule, without impacting normal operations of our clients.
