Powerhouse Asbestos Abatement and Structural Demolition

Smokestack implosion in process

Strategically placed explosives and careful engineering controls facilitated the safe descent of the smokestack, which previously rose 323-ft. atop the ten-story facility.

Related Services

MARCOR performed asbestos abatement of three boilers; abatement and demolition of rooftop breeching; demolition of a rooftop parapet wall, implosion of a 323-ft. smokestack; removal of more than 300 tons of fly-ash and 50,000 gallons of contaminated water; and demolition of the powerhouse at the Penn Coach Yard facility, which is more than 60 years old.

MARCOR’s crew regulated the work areas, posted appropriate signage, and installed a three-stage worker decontamination chamber for ingress/egress. Negative air containment systems were also set up, including critical barriers over windows. Personal protective equipment for workers included half-face respirators, gloves, Tyvek suits with foot covers, hard hats, and safety glasses.

Asbestos abatement operations addressed three boilers (insulation, door gaskets, wall panels, and breeching), pipe and tank insulations throughout the facility, transite in bathroom and roof areas, and miscellaneous asbestos-containing debris. The removed asbestos-containing materials were properly double-bagged and labeled for disposal at an EPA-approved facility. All affected surfaces were HEPA-vacuumed and wet-wiped, with clearance sampling performed by a third party air-monitoring firm.

Following successful implosion of the smokestack, which was situated atop the 10-story base, the implosion subcontractor (CDI) sent an e-mail to the MARCOR project manager commending MARCOR’s performance and overall handling of the project. An excerpt follows:

You were able … to get the job ready in time under very difficult political circumstances…. A job very, very well done. Thank you for the opportunity to be involved. It was good to work again with MARCOR on a safe and successful project."

MARCOR has performed more than 160 other projects at various locations for this same customer, including asbestos abatement, disaster recovery (fire), storage tank management, oil and fuel spill emergency cleanups, removal of PCBs, duct cleaning, mold remediation, cleaning of oil/water separators, lab packs, installation of track pans, transformer removals, debris cleanup/ removal, bio-waste disposal, lead-based paint abatement, and other, miscellaneous tasks.
